GLAMouria pienessä koossa – GLAMour in a small package

Article in English

Hei.

Lopputuloksena on sitten koodi, jolla voit kyseisen auton tilata.

Jo väriä valitessasi edessäsi on värejä kuten The Greyfather, James Blonde tai I’ll be Black. Koeajo auto oli A Star is Brown…eli siis ruskea. Jos tarkkoja ollaan niin sellainen kaakaon värinen. Jatketaan sitten vanteiden valinnasta.

Side

Testattu Opel Adam oli siis väriltään A Star is Brown ja Glam -mallinen. Yöaikaan on siis mahdollisuus ihailla aivan oikeaa tähtitaivasta. Adam on pieni auto mutta etumatkustajille on varattu suurin osa auton pituudesta.

Tässä hieman Adamin teknisiä ominaisuuksia:

– Moottori: 1.4 litran ECOTEC bensiinimoottori Start/Stop järjestelmällä
– Teho: 87 hevosvoimaa
– Vaihteisto: 5-vaihteinen käsivalintainen
– Polttoaineen yhdistetty kulutus: 5.1 l /100 km
– CO2 päästöt: 119 g/km

Rear

Takaa Adam loppuu lyhyeen. Perä on hieman viisto ja takaspoilerin kohdalle on peltiin tehty pieni rypistys. Takaluukun saa auki painamalla Opel-logoa ja nostamalla luukkua.

Front

Edestä Adam on sulavalinjainen.

Rims

Adam Glamissa on 17” kevytmetallivanteet.

Meters

Mittaristoon aika perus Opelia. Keskellä on pieni näyttö, josta näkee tärkeimmät tiedot.

MiddleConsole

Keskellä on lisää nappeja. Vasemmalta löytyy esimerkiksi ratin lämmitys ja kuljettajan penkin lämmitys. Lisäksi on ohjaustehostimen lisätehostusnappi, joka auttanee vaikka taskuparkkeerauksessa. Oikealla taas on etumatkustajan penkin lämmitys sekä keskuslukituksen napit. Aivan keskellä on sitten näyttö.

GlassWindow

Lasikatto on mukava varuste varsinkin näin pieneen autoon.

Opel Adam on pieneksi autoksi mukava ajaa.

ENGLISH

Hi.

I wonder if Adam Opel would have guessed that after 117 years from his death, Opel automobiles are still made and one of them is named after him. Opel brought a new and trendy small car named Adam last year. It became available in Finland only about a week ago.

I was very happy when Länsi-Auto Turku contacted me and offered an Opel Adam for testing. After all, it is currently IN and with its trendy looks, very interesting. On the very first work day after the premier, I took it for a test run.

You walk to the Opel dealer and start discussing about buying an Adam. The first thing you need to decide is whether you take “Jam, Glam or Slam” (and thank you ma’m…well probably not this last thing). Choosing the package for you Adam is this easy at first; only three choices. Jam is the basic model, Glam is a bit better equipped and Slam is the best one with the most powerful engine. Our test car was Glam.

But oh no, did you really think it was this easy? You’ll get a symphony of choices after this. A web application is on its way to Opel internet site. You can use it to make the decisions of how your Adam will look like. The outcome is a code that is used at the car dealer to order that car you designed.

Now you may think that what all this fuss is about. How hard can it be to choose a car? You’ve picked the model and usually the rest is about tires and color maybe some extras. This is how it normally is but not with Adam. When choosing your favorite color, you’ll get choices like The Greyfather, James Blond or I’ll be Black. The test car I had was colored as A Star is Brown. If I’m more specific, it looks like a hot chocolate drink. Now, let’s continue with wheels. Adam has 30 rims to choose from and all of them are aluminum alloy.

Then we just have a few choices left like the color of the interior, color of the side mirrors, lath color inside and the bottom half of the steering wheel. You can even choose a star sky with LED lights to the ceiling. If you are a picky person and don’t like single colors, no worries, just take some of the patterns available and you can get flower figures to your side mirrors etc. I’m sure you’ll realize at this point that there is no way the dealer can pre-order Adams. Every Adam is a unique piece.

I still have one good piece of information for the fashionable and to those who tend to change their mind pretty often. All these laths and patterns can be changed afterwards. This is also a good news to those who are going to be the 2nd owners of the car, they can re-style it to their own taste.

Let’s get back to my test drive after all this wondering about the choices.

Side

The Opel Adam that I tested was colored as A Star is Brown and model was Glam. It had white laths, silver bottom half of the steering wheel and black dashboard with a tiny pattern. You could say it also had a star sky ceiling but it wasn’t the one with LEDs. This Adam had a glass roof so you can see out all the time. During the night with a clear sky you can see the real stars shining and showing you the way.
Adam is a small car and the most of the space is reserved for the ones sitting in the front.

Here is some specifications for Adam:

– Engine: 1.4 liter ECOTEC petrol engine with a Start/Stop system
– Power: 87 horsepower
– Transmission: 5-speed manual
– Average fuel consumption: 5.1 l /100 km
– CO2 emissions: 119 g/km

Rear

Rear end on the Adam is very short. It’s slightly sloped and there is a little crease where a spoiler is usually located. Tail hatch is opened by pushing the Opel logo and lifting a bit at the same time.

Front

Adam looks very streamlined at the front. There is a crease under the head lights which look a bit like a bristly upper lip. Head lights have a bit similar form as in Nissan Juke, meaning they look a little froggy. Not nearly as much as in a Juke though.

Rims

Adam Glam has 17” wheels by standard. This is a huge size if you compare to what little cars usually have but it definitely brings more style in to this car. On the other hand it also produces more noise from the tires. Not enough to make it annoying though.

Trunk

Opel has concentrated on giving as much space as possible for the people inside, so there is not much room left for the trunk. As you put stuff in, usually you need to lift the “parcel shelf” in order to get them in. It happened to me several times that I forgot to lower it down and just when I was about to start reversing, I noticed it blocking part of the view. As for the space in the trunk, I’d say you can fit 4-5 shopping bags there side-by-side or maybe one small trolley small enough so you can take it inside an airplane. I also tested it with a golf bag and you can’t even fit a golf bag meant for about 10 year old kids there without lowering down one of the back seats first.

Cockpit

There was a rather nice space for front seat passengers except for your left foot (or right if you have RHD car) when it’s resting. I couldn’t stretch my leg straight and I’m sure it would have been numbing on a long journey. Adam is clearly a city car meant for short stints. Steering wheel has three spokes although the lower one it nearly cut in half. It has buttons and rollers on both side and I’m not really a huge fan of the rollers on the steering wheel. The ring on the steering wheel is quite thick which meant it’s comfortable to hold on.

Adjusting the steering wheel is a little inconvenient. You can adjust it up/down and forwards/back but when you’ve set it to your liking, it will partly block the view to the meters. This means you need to set it too high for a clear view.

Meters

The meters are similar to what Opel usually have. There is a small screen in the center and it shows the most important readings. There is a RPM meter on the left and speedometer on the right. Engine temperature and the amount of fuel is shown in smaller meters inside the bigger ones.

MiddleConsole

More buttons on the middle. There’s a button for heating the steering wheel and driver’s seat on the left and also a button for boosting up the power steering which should help in parking for some. On the right hand side we have the seat heating for the front passenger and for the central locking. There is a screen right in the middle.

You can get an optional IntelliLink system (which this car had) with a 7” touchscreen. Besides listening music, you can also make some adjustments for the car settings like automating the central locking or adjusting the A/C. There’s an app called BringGo for iOS and Android mobile devices and it connects your device to the IntelliLink system. This is a way to use your mobile device via IntelliLink and you can even get a navigation system for your car if your device has GPS (which it usually has). A bluetooth link is used for connection so even non Apple or Android devices can play music through the seven speakers in the car.

There is also USB and RCA connectors for playing music.

GlassWindow

A glass roof is rather excellent feature in a small car like this. It brings more light inside and the car seems to have more space. Naturally it’s also nice to watch some scenery through it although it’s a bit more difficult if you are driving.

BackSeats

You might see it from the picture above but there is hardly any room at the back. To my surprise, trying to fit in there was successful even for an adult. There is a little curving made on the back of the front seats so that your knees fit in there. I’m not saying it was comfortable sitting there but I recon it’s mildly ok if the ride is short enough. Back seats are mainly for children and bags. There is also ISOFIX connectors for baby seats.

CONCLUSION

Opel Adam is an excellent drive for a small car. Some time it even feels larger than it is but still it maneuvers easily in tighter places too. This car is built for people looking for trends and the liberty of choosing. The biggest competitors for Adam are Fiat 500 and Mini. The starting prices for Adam are similar to Fiat with Mini being a bit more expensive. I can recommend this car as a second vehicle and/or for people that like the idea of styling their car totally as their own liking and just love the opportunity to choose colors everywhere.

I conclude this article with the video I made during the testing. On this video I go through the features on Adam and tell you what I think of it. I’m talking in Finnish but I’ve created English subtitles for non-Finns.
