Teräväpiirto-ohjelmia koko perheelle

Edellisestä blogi-artikkelista alkaakin olla jo tosi pitkä aika, joten nyt on korkea aika taas kirjoittaa. Tällä kertaa otin mulkaisuun Canal Digital Perhe HD -palvelun.
Kaikki alkoi siitä, kun tavallinen antenniverkkoon kytketty tallentava digiboksimme pimeni ennen joulua. Tai paremminkin meni sillä tavalla epäkuntoon, että se ei enää tallentanut. Tutkinnan alla on vielä menikö siitä kovalevy, virtalähde vai jokin muu. Kyseessä Topfieldin laite (muistaakseni 160G) ja ikä oli n. 2 vuotta.
Joka tapauksessa Giganttiinhan siitä sitten tuli lähtö. Siellä myyjä ilmoitti heti, että harkitkaa tarkkaan uuden digiboksin hankintaa, koska samalla hinnalla saa Canal Digitalin satelliittivirittimellä olevan 500Gt digiboksin. Tietenkin, satelliittivirittimen kanssa tarvitaan myös itse satelliittilautanen sekä jokin kanavapaketti. Kanavapaketin hinta oli lopulta ensimmäisen vuoden osalta 19,90€/kk, joten hieman jopa halvempi kuin aiemmin boksissamme ollut plusTV. Tämä tarjous on muuten voimassa ainoastaan 31.01.2013 asti. Joulun alla Canal Digitalilla oli vielä sellainen tarjous, että laitteiden asennus oli ilmaista. Asennus kesti kaikkineen noin 1.5 tuntia.
Tuumasta toimeen siis ja tilaus vetämään. Miinuksena tässä kohtaa pitää sanoa, että toimitusaika ei ollut kaikkein lyhin. Tavaroilla (jotka tulivat Matkahuollon kuljettamina lähimpään Siwaan) kesti saapua n. 2 viikkoa. Onneksi meidän vanha digiboksimme ei hajonnut kokonaan, vaan sillä pystyi kuitenkin katsomaan televisiota. Ajatelkaa, mitä olisi tapahtunut jos olisi pitänyt olla kaksi viikkoa ilman televisiota. Katastrofi. Asentajakin oli saanut tiedon meidän tilauksestamme (ennen kuin matkahuolto ehti tavarat meille kuljettaa) ja soitteli sopiakseen asennusaikaa. Asennusta oli kuitenkin pakko lykätä, koska asennettavat tavarat eivät olleet saapuneet. Näin ei kuulemma ole koskaan ennen käynyt. Noh, meillepä kävi!
Asennus oli ammattilaiselta hyvin suoraviivaista. Joskin asennuspäivänä meidän pihalla oli yli 50 cm lunta tuolla talon takana mihin antennille suunniteltiin paras paikka. Kompassista vain suuntima 1 aste etelästä länteen päin ja jonkin sopivan, tukevan kiinnityspaikan etsintä. Talon seinässä oli jo valmiiksi jääkaapin takana reikä oikealla seinällä, joten sitä kautta saatiin kaapelit (2 kpl) kätevästi sisätiloihin. Lopulta siis ei tarvinnut porata reikiä kuin yhteen väliseinään, jotta kaapelit saatiin olohuoneeseen. Systeemissä on kaksi kaapelia sen takia, että satelliitilta signaalin vastaanottava laite tarvitsee sähköä ja sen sähkön syöttää digiboksi.
Varsinainen digiboksi on siis tallennuskapasiteetiltaan 500Gt. Boksi sisältää normaalit toiminnot tallennukseen, katsottavan lähetyksen pysäytykseen, teksti-tv:n käyttöön sekä vielä Canal Digitalin oman videovuokraamo palvelunkin. Tätä jälkimmäistä ominaisuutta emme ole päässeet kokeilemaan, koska opaskirjojen mukaan ADSL-linjan nopeuden pitäisi olla >3M ja meille vedetyt vanhat parikaapeli-puhelinlinjat eivät yli 2M:ää pysty siirtämään. Ehkä tämä ominaisuus päästään joskus tulevaisuudessa testaamaan, ei kuitenkaan vielä.
Meidän valitsemaamme Perhe HD pakettiin kuuluu 56 kanavaa, joista 10 on teräväpiirto (HD) kanavia. Tämä oli suuri syy siihen, että päädyimme valitsemaan satelliittipaketin emmekä tavallista antenniverkon digiboksia. Mielenkiinnosta halusimme nähdä miltä teräväpiirto-ohjelmat televisiossa näyttävät. Ja pakko on kyllä myöntää, että aika mykistävä on ero tavallisella- ja teräväpiirto-ohjelmalla. Hyvänä esimerkkinä luontodokumentit, joissa yleensä on käytetty paljon kirkkaita värejä. Paketissa teräväpiirtokanavia ovat mm. seuraavat MTV3 HD, Yle HD, Animal Planet HD ja Discovery Channel HD. Muita pakettiin sisältyviä kanavia, joita meidän perheessä usein katsellaan ovat lasten kanavat MTV3 Juniori, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, yms. Tietenkin myös ns. tavalliset suomalaiset kanavat MTV3, Yle, Nelonen ja SubTV näkyvät. Poikkeuksena tässä “normaalien” kanavien listassa on TV5 ja Kutonen. Näitä kahta kanavaa ei vielä satelliitin kautta voi katsella, mutta siihenkin varmaan on tulevaisuudessa tulossa muutos jahka “pomot” saavat sovittua nämäkin kanavat kulkemaan avaruuden kautta. Tämä viimeinen lause oli lainattu keskustelusta asentajan kanssa. Tähän vielä lisäyksenä, että ensimmäisen 14 pv kaikki satelliitin kautta saapuvat kanavat ovat katseltavissa. Ja niitä on satoja.
Toisena pienenä miinuksena pitänee antaa digiboksin tallennusominaisuus. En ole ihan varma mistä tämä ongelma johtuu, mutta luulin että digiboksissa on kaksi viritintä ja että niiden toiminta olisi samanlaista kuin antenniverkon digibokseissakin. Niillähän pystyy tallentamaan kahta kanavaa ja vielä katsomaan kolmatta, jos tämä kolmas kanava kuuluu samaan “kanavanippuun” kuin jompi kumpi tallennettavista kanavista. Ongelmana nyt siis on se, että tässä satelliittidigiboksissa homma ei mene samalla tavalla. Tai sitten olen sattunut jotenkin koko ajan tallentelemaan sellaisia kanavia, jotka estävät niiden kanavien katselun mitä haluaisin samaan aikaan katsella. Esim. Nelosen ja SubTV:n tallennus hiljentää muut kanavat hyvin tehokkaasti. Tämän ongelman/ominaisuuden selvitys on vielä ns. work-in-progress ja vaatii lisäselvittelyjä siitä mitkä kanavat yhdisteltyinä aiheuttavat näitä ongelmia. En edes vielä tiedä tuleeko satelliitin välityksellä kanavat samalla tavalla “nipuissa” kuin mitä antenniverkon digilähetyksissä.
Ehdottomana positiivisena asiana tästä paketista on kerrottava kuvanlaatu ja lähetyksen laatu. Molemmat ovat olleet koko ajan mainioita sekä SD-kanavilla, että HD-kanavilla. Kertaakaan en ole havainnut kuvassa mitään ongelmia. Toisinaan antenniverkon digiboksilla kuvassa esiintyi häiriöitä esim. kovalla tuulella. Loppuvuoden ja vuodenvaihteen kovat tuulet ja lumimyräkät eivät vaikuttaneet lähetykseen mitenkään.
Loppujen lopuksi palvelu oli hyvää ja laitteet laadukkaita. Pienet ongelmat toimituksen kanssa ovat jo unohtuneet ja hyvä kuvanlaatu on viimestään vienyt ne murheet mennessään. Palvelulla oli 30 pv:n palautusoikeus, mutta me emme tule sitä oikeutta käyttämään. Tämä jää meille. Voin myös lämpimästi suositella tätä muille, jotka joutuvat digiboksiaan syystä tai toisesta uusimaan. On kuitenkin hyvä huomioida, että tuo hinta 19,90€/kk on voimassa ainoastaan ensimmäisen vuoden. Sopimus palvelun käytöstä tehdään kuitenkin kahdeksi vuodeksi ja toisena vuonna kuukausimaksu nousee 34,90€:oon. Itselleni perustelin tätä korotusta sillä, että tuo korkeampi hinta ei kuitenkaan ole kuin muutaman euron korkeampi kuin mitä plusTV:n paketti+korttimaksu olivat. Ja nyt sai näitä teräväpiirtokanavia, mistä oikeasti maksaa mielellään tuon hieman korkeamman hinnan ensi vuonna (tämän vuoden siis jopa halvempi kuin plusTV).

High Definition TV programs for entire family
It has been quite a while since my last blog article so it is time to contribute something and test my new digital satellite system. To be more precise it is a satellite service from Canal Digital and the channel package is called Perhe HD or Family HD in Finland. Unfortunately, it seems that Canal Digital doesn’t have any web page in english to describe this channel package. Although Canal Digital does have international website at http://www.canaldigital.com.
It all started when our ordinary terrestrial digital receiver said kaputt, finito, good night just before christmas. It is not completely broken, it can be used to view TV Programs but it cannot record anything into the hard drive any more. It is still under investigation if the problem is with the hard drive itself, the power unit or something else. The receiver was a Topfield (if I remember correctly it was 160G) and it was only 2 years old.
Anyway, I wasn’t given many choices. I had to go to the nearest store which sells this kind of equipment. The store was Gigantti (http://www.gigantti.fi). It seems to be the same with Gigantti as it was with Canal Digital, I cannot find website in english. Sorry about that. Maybe you can find the Canal Digital retailer from the Canal Digital website (check the beginning of this article for address). In Gigantti the sales personnel told me that I should seriously consider if I wanted to spend money in terrestrial digital receiver because with same amount of cash I could have satellite receiver from Canal Digital which also has 500G space for programs. Of course, with satellite system you also need the satellite dish and some channel package. The channel package was priced at 19,90€/month (the first year) so it was actually a bit cheaper than the one we had in our previous system (plusTV). This current offer is valid until 31.01.2013. Also, before christmas Canal Digital had special offer to give the installation/mounting labour for free. The installation took approximately 1.5h.
So, on with the idea and we ordered the system. At this point I have to give a small minus for the delivery time which wasn’t the shortest. The goods (which were delivered by Matkahuolto to the nearest small grocery store, Siwa) took 2 weeks to arrive. Luckily our previous receiver didn’t break completely and we were still able to watch TV using it. Think about the misery it would have caused if you are not able to watch TV in two weeks. Disaster. Even the mechanic who was supposed to make the installation received the information about our order and called us to agree on the installation date before we even received the equipment. We had to postpone the installation because of that. Mechanic told us that this has never happened before… And of course it was us that were the first!
Tha actual installation was pretty straight-forward when executed by a professional. Although, on the day of installation our garden had 50 cm of snow where the satellite dish was finally installed. Correct alignment for the dish was 1 degree to west from south and the dish needed some sturdy place not to be affected by the elements. Our home had already one suitable hole in the wall behind the refrigerator so it was easy to take the cables (system needs 2 cables) inside. Finally only one wall needed to be punctured (behind a bookshelf) to get the cables to the living room. The system has two cables because the device receiving the signal from satellite needs external power. This power is taken from the digital receiver in the living room.
So, the actual digital receiver has a capacity of 500GB. The receiver includes all the normal functions for recording, pausing the current TV program, teletext and it also has Canal Digitals own online movie rental service. Unfortunately, this latter service is unavailable for us as the service requires ADSL with speed greater than 3MB and our home with very old telephone lines is only capable to support max 2MB ADSL. Maybe this functionality will be available for us (and for testing) in the future, but not yet anyways.
The channel package we chose includes 56 channels. 10 of them are high definition (HD) channels. This was maybe the main reason why we ended up with this system instead of the ordinary terrestrial digital system. Out of curiosity, we wanted to see how the HD programs look like. Now, after few weeks I have to admit that the difference between normal SD and HD is quite astonishing. One good example are the nature/animal documents which usually are full of colour. This channel package has among other the following HD channels. MTV3 HD, Yle HD, Animal Planet HD and Discovery HD. Other channels included in this package which are mandatory in our family nowadays are MTV3 Juniori, Cartoon Network, Nickeloden, etc. Of course the usual finnish TV channels like MTV3, Yle, Nelonen and SubTV are available. As an exception for these normal channels in our package are the TV5 and Kutonen. These two new channels are not yet available. According to the discussion with the technician it is only a matter of the time when these will also be available. In addition to this the first 14 days all channels via satellite are available. And there are hundreds of them.
Another small minus about this system is the recording functionality. I’m not quite sure what causes this issue but I though the receiver would have two tuners in it and that those tuner would function like they do in the normal terrestrial receiver. In the normal receiver you can record two different channels and watch the third one if this third one is sent in the same channel bundle as one of the recorded ones. The problem now is that this satellite system doesn’t work like the normal one does. Or it might be that I have just accidentally tried to watch the channels that are not included in the bundles. For example recording Nelonen and SubTV quite effectively mutes all other channels. Solving this problem/property is still work-in-progress at it needs some more testing and combining the channels which are recorded. I don’t even know yet if the satellite system sends the channels in bundles like normal terrestrial system.
One big positive plus has to be given for this service/package and it the quality of the broadcast. There hasn’t been any problems and the quality has been great with both SD- and HD-programs. Not once I have seen any distortion or problems with the image. With the old system there were some issues for example with high winds. During the end of year 2012 and new year the high winds and snow storms didn’t have any affect on the quality of broadcast.
At the end the satellite service and the digital HD receiver are great. Small problems in the beginning are now forgotten and good quality in broadcast helps to forget them even better. This service had 30 days return policy in case you are not satisfied with it. We are not going to use that policy. This stays with us. I can highly recommend this to anyone who needs to buy a new digital receiver for any reason. Although it should be said that the price 19,90€/month is only valid for the first year. The contract with Canal Digital is made for 2 years and the second year has monthly fee of 34,90€. Anyway, with this price you receive 10 HD channels and the price really isn’t much higher (few euros per month) when compared to the package we previously had from plusTV. Infact, this first year is cheaper than the plusTV.
